The Economic Homeless

I gave a text message donation to help people in Haiti. In fact, most of the people I know gave money. This is great, they need our help.

But, there is another group of people who need our help—and they are, literally, in our own backyards.

They are the “economic homeless”—men, women and children who lost their jobs and then lost their homes. Families who are now living in tent cities or villages made out of tool sheds. They have no bathrooms, no running water, and no electricity. They have no security, and no safety. They have no heat.

A natural disaster never fails to gain our sympathy. We know that there was nothing anyone could do to prevent it. That no one asked to be in an earthquake, hurricane, or tsunami. But, wh

Top 3 Credit Cards for Bad Credit

When you have bad credit, you’re probably going to think that there’s no end in sight.  If you have that feeling that you’re not going to be able to fix your credit again, you’re not alone, but it is possible.  You just have to understand that you’re going to have to have patience, as well motivation to get your score up to where you want it.

What you’re going to want to look into is a secured credit card.  A secured card is basically a card that’s going to help anyone rebuild your credit.  Anyone is going to be approved, as long as you provide the bank with a small deposit.  This deposit can range anywhere from $200 – $500.  As long as you can provide the deposit, you will get approved.

When looking for a card like this, make sure that you look into the fees, as well as look into the reviews.  There are a lot of scams out there, as well as cards that really will help you.  You’ll want to make sure that you pay your bill off on time, and use it like a regular card.  The reason the bank will ask for that deposit is simply because if you miss a payment, they can dip into your account, and pay the bill themselves.  So, you’re going to find that it’s a win-win for both parties.

The top 3 credit cards for bad credit today (2/1/10)…

  • Public Saving Bank Card: This is by far my favorite card on the market today.  It has low fees, and very good reviews online.  What I like about this card is that it has a one time fee, rather than an annual fee.
  • Orchard Bank Classic Cards: Orchard Bank is known for their cards that help those with bad credit.  You’ll want to look into these, and see which one is right for you.  They all vary, but in my personal opinion, they all get pretty high marks in terms of card perks, and customer service.
  • Platinum Zero Card: The last card on my list is the Platinum Zero card by Applied Bank.  It has low fees, and the APR is one of the lowest in the secured credit card market.

Try out a few of these cards, and look into the fees, as well as what other people think of them.  Yes, there are other cards on the market, but you will find that these are some of the best of the best.

Q. Do you have any thoughts or recommendations for an individual that has $50,000 high interest credit card balance(s) – mostly American Express. She needs the cards to run her current business – so she doesn’t wish to cancel the cards – and can’t get the credit card companies to lower the rate.

A. I’m going to assume the person in question is having trouble making credit card payments due to high interest rates and you’re not merely asking because the interest rates amount to highway robbery. Which of course they are.

The New York Times article: Jobless Turn to Family for Help profiles 62-year-old Jean Ley of Warrenton, Oregon who lost her job as a mental health counselor in June 2008. She has not found another job since then.

She had little savings. Unemployment benefits were not going to be enough to pay her bills. She was at risk of losing her home here on the Oregon coast.

But the assistance proved more than temporary. A year and half later, her son’s regular payments covering her mortgage and occasional emergencies, like a car repair or arthritis medication, have proven to be her bulwark from economic catastrophe.
